Colorism is a discrimination of skin color. It is mostly found in non-Caucasian racial groups such as African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Indian and other cultures. I first heard the term a couple years ago, but I never really understood what it implied. It’s supposed to be a prejudice against a specific skin color based on what social meaning is attached to that color.
I watched a documentary last month, called “Dark Girls”, which extensively discuss this issue in the African American community. It’s a very informative documentary and I highly encourage readers to watch it because it is a real problem that stems from the “white is better complex.” I don’t think any one skin tone is better than the other because in reality, color can’t overshadow the fact that someone can have a terrible personality or character with whichever colored skin. I think it’s strange that there’s this division in the African American community; the apparent ‘light skin vs. dark skin’ feud. In comparing the two, yes there is a clear difference but amongst differences there are attractive qualities in each that make them both good and bad.
