Awards season is coming. The People’s Choice Awards kicked off the year earlier this month, the Golden Globes were this past week, the Grammys and the BAFTA Film Awards just so happen to be on the same day in early February, and the Academy Awards are merely 2 weeks after that. Let the preparations ensue.
Televised award ceremonies are often a time of glamour, flash, and the clear privilege of those in the entertainment business but it’s also about talent, the films, shows, and music that impact people, and artistic expression. I’m sure 2015 will bring a whole slew of memorable awards moments, but for now I’d like to talk about 2014’s Oscars. It’s practically a tradition for me and my family to watch it every year. This year it will be towards the end of February. There’s always excitement and buzz over what or who everyone’s wearing or what great film, in each category, will win in a pool of many good ones. I thought there were many great moments last year including the slightly infamous Ellen Degeneres Oscar selfie that broke Twitter, the pure lusciousness of Jared Leto’s hair the whole evening, Edgar the pizza guy’s television debut, Idina Menzel’s “Let it Go” performance, and the very amusing fact that Jennifer Lawrence fell again at an awards show. I was very well entertained. But by far my favorite moment or moments would have to be the acceptance speeches. These are three of my personal favorite: the speech for supporting actor Jared Leto, supporting actress Lupita Nyong’o, and of best actor Matthew McConaughey. Each provided a uniqueness and magnificence in just so many words; and also provided a sense of self acceptance, gratitude, and hope. Which are all magnificent human qualities. These speeches were very important in my opinion because for a moment they distracted the viewers from the aesthetic aspects of the whole “biggest evening in film,” and focused more on the art and practice of film making.

Fun Fact: I've actually been to an awards show. Nothing as extravagant as the Oscars but it was still a great experience. I had the pleasure of attending the Young Hollywood Awards in 2014 and honestly it was one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me because I actually saw some of my favorite actors, actresses, musicians and YouTube stars in person. My appreciation for some of the pivotal roles these young entertainers play in film and music has always been apparent to me but it felt more real once I saw them in person. It was just so cool!
