I had the pleasure of taking a Women Studies course this past fall and I enjoyed the discussions and perspectives that came from the class. I definitely learned a bit about the topic of Feminism. (Actually, that’s sort of a lie because I learned a lot more than I ever really knew but I am not a well versed master in the subject or anything). What I took out most from the topic was that feminism is the political, social, and economic equality of the sexes but most importantly it is about the freedom of choice. I’m not saying feminism is the best thing to happen to this world because it’s not perfect nor is any other societal manifestations, policies, or organizations for that matter. But the idea, that you should have a choice in how you perceive yourself and make your own decisions about life is very crucial. To some degrees, I do identify as an advocator for some feminist ideologies and if you ask me if I was a feminist I would probably say yes. I’d truthfully appreciate the same opportunities of progression in a career as a male without being sidelined because of future “maternal obligations” a group of, most like, men assume I will undertake without a level of professionalism. Or the ability for any man (homosexual or heterosexual) to be open and comfortable to express emotions or unconventional ideas without being seen as weak, insufficient, or even “feminine” like it’s some sort of insult.
I might be able to go on forever about this topic but that will bring all kinds of issues and take away from the importance of choice and equality and start an internet feud. Those never end very well because one or both sides of an argument are often too “hyped” that they can’t bring themselves down long enough to try and understand the other side of the story. I really wanted to discuss or introduce this topic because feminism was talked about a lot in 2014. Below are a few things that happened in the year that I thought I would add because they made quite a splash and produced a lot of discussion in the past year.

Below, the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson’s He For She campaign speech and transcript. What do you think about it?
Below, one of many articles opposed to the He For She campaign. It is honest, as any writer should be, but it also makes some interesting points. What are your views about this writer’s thoughts?

Below, is the music video for Beyonce’s song “Flawless.” Of course I would add this. She has definitely made the term feminism a thing to remember. I really did like the fact that she included the excerpt from Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
